Nothing is cleaned on your floor with a wand, and nothing is fed through a machine that cannot tell silk from a doormat. Rugs leave, get worked properly, and come home.
Fitted carpet is stretched over a pad and sealed underneath. It drains downward, it is anchored at the edges, and it will tolerate a fairly rough approach. A rug is the opposite in every respect: open on both faces, unattached, resting on a floor you also care about, and in many cases held together entirely by hand-tied knots on a cotton warp that predates the house.
Clean one in place with a hot-water wand and three things go wrong at once. Soil sitting at the base of the pile gets pushed further down instead of coming out. Moisture enters the foundation with nowhere to go, which is how a musty rug is made. And the hardwood or LVP underneath quietly takes on whatever the wand pushed through.
Working off-site removes all three problems. The rug comes out of the house, gives up its dry soil before it meets any liquid, gets washed and flushed until the runoff is clear, and dries flat in moving air on a floor built for exactly that. Then it goes back where it belongs.

This is the stain that brings most people to us, and it is the one that punishes a do-it-yourself attempt hardest.
Our soil is red because it is loaded with iron oxide, and the particles are extremely fine. Two properties follow from that. The first is that the particles work their way to the very bottom of the pile and sit against the foundation, well below where a vacuum can reach. The second is that iron pigment is chemically reactive: apply heat, or a high-pH detergent, and it stops being a deposit resting on the fiber and starts being a color bonded to it.
That is why the usual advice makes things worse. Pouring water on fresh clay turns a contained deposit into a wide brown halo, because you have suspended the particles and given them somewhere to travel. Scrubbing drives them sideways and down. A hot extraction on a rented machine achieves both at once and finishes by setting whatever is left.
Restraint first. Anything still wet is left alone until it is bone dry, because dry clay fractures and lifts while wet clay smears. From there it is a sequence of small controlled steps rather than one aggressive assault.

A second pass if it will help. If the pigment is bonded for good, you get told plainly.
In this order, without exception. Reordering these stages is how rugs get damaged.
The rug is opened flat and read from both faces. We record construction, fiber, previous repairs and every mark worth noting, then swab each color to see what the dyes will do in water. That map decides everything downstream.
Grit leaves before liquid arrives. A family rug from a Madison County house routinely gives up several pounds of clay-heavy dust to compressed air and controlled beating. For long-term wear this stage matters more than any other.
Clay deposits, pollen-loaded traffic lanes, pet accidents and individual spots are each addressed with chemistry matched to the fiber, then given time to work. Wool and silk stay near neutral pH; a polypropylene rug can take considerably more.
Full immersion, worked by hand with soft brushes running with the pile rather than across it, so suspended soil floats away instead of being driven back in. Fragile pieces and unstable dyes take a low-moisture route instead.
Rinsing continues until the water leaves clean, then the last pass is softened. Skipping that is why a home wash with valley tap water leaves wool feeling chalky and dull — mineral deposit in the pile that then attracts fresh soil.
Water is drawn out mechanically, then the rug dries flat under filtered moving air — never in direct sun, which fades dye and hardens wool. Pile is groomed back into direction, ends are tidied, and the rug is checked against the intake map.
Construction dictates method. Getting that pairing wrong is the whole risk in this trade.

From late winter through June the valley runs a heavy pollen load, and rugs collect it faithfully. Once the pile is saturated the rug stops filtering and starts emitting, releasing a little back into the room with every step. A full wash flushes the load out and puts it back to work.
Limestone bedrock means mineral-rich tap water, and anything cleaned at home with it keeps a share of those minerals. The result is wool that feels slightly gritty, sits flat instead of catching light, and picks up new dirt quickly. A softened final rinse takes the film back off.
Urine leaves crystallised salts in the foundation that wake up whenever the room gets humid, and left long enough they burn the dye out from beneath. Surface treatment cannot reach them. Immersion flushing removes the deposit, and color is rebuilt afterwards where the dye did not survive.
A rug that spent a winter in a crawlspace, an unconditioned garage or the back of a storage unit smells that way because something is growing in the foundation. It is a biological problem, not a fragrance problem, so it gets flushed out and treated rather than covered over.
This town moves people. Arsenal assignments rotate, contracts finish, program offices relocate, and a household that arrived three years ago is suddenly boxing up for somewhere else entirely. Rugs are almost always the last thing anyone thinks about and the first thing that gets damaged.
The failure mode is consistent. A rug is rolled with its accumulated grit still inside it, then sits in a container or a storage unit for months. The grit abrades the foundation from within every time the roll is handled. If there was any moisture in the pile it now has darkness, warmth and time. And a soiled wool rug in a dark box is the single most attractive thing you can offer a clothes moth.
None of that is difficult to prevent, it just has to happen before the packers arrive rather than after.
Wash, dry completely, treat wool against moths, roll pile-out on a tube, wrap in breathable material, and label each roll with size, fiber and condition.
Rugs that arrived in a crate get unrolled, inspected for crush lines, moth activity and transit damage, then washed and blocked flat before they go down in the new house.
Tell us when the packers are scheduled and we will work backwards from it. Wrapping for storage only works if the rug is genuinely dry to the foundation, and that is not something to rush in the last week.
Shrink wrap looks protective and behaves like a sealed bag. Any moisture left in the pile stays in the pile. Breathable wrapping over a tube is what actually protects a rug in storage.
